Meander through the historic old town with Route A and head out to the coast on Route B. This route now has a new stop at Paseo de la Alameda at the door of the Archivo Municipal, which will allow you to visit the Mestalla Forever Tour and the Museum of Military History. Tickets are available for either 24 or 48 hours and there are audioguides in eight languages.

Valencia has been the capital of this part of eastern Spain since the time of the Islamic Taifa of Balansiya, more than 1,000 years ago and as such boasts a number of palaces and churches that are renowned throughout the world. Route A has 9 stops: Plaça de la Reina, IVAM, San Pio V, Nuevo centro, the Conference Hall, Dama Ibérica, Bioparc, Valencia History Museum and AVE. See the stunning Silk Exchange, La Llotja, a medieval hall that is considered a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. Just over 100 metres from Stop 1 is the beautiful Cathedral, a mainly Gothic structure that also has Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque and neo-Classical features. Alight at Stop 3 and visit the Museum of Fine Arts or maybe take a stroll the park over the dried-up riverbed of the Turia.

Take Route B and discover the city’s maritime heritage. This line heads out to the Mediterranean, where Valencia has opened out to the world since time immemorial. There are 12 stops: Plaça de la Reina, Plaza de Toros, the Fallas Museum, City of Arts and Sciences, l’Oceanogràfic, Aqua, Marina Real, Las Arenas, the port, Baleares, Mestalla · Military Historical Museum and San Pio V. Escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city with a visit to Albufera Natural Park just a few kilometres south of the city. This wonderful wetland is centres around a large lagoon and is served by a hop on-hop off bus service from Valencia. The contrast between the urban jungle and the unspoiled wilds so close together could not be greater. This tour also includes a cruise on the lagoon.

The bus has six stops within Valencia proper, including the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences, before heading south past rice paddies on the way to the park. Arrive at Albufera and drive along the narrow strip of pines and sand dunes that separates the lagoon from the Mediterranean. Catch a glimpse of the hundreds of species of birds, including storks and northern shovellers. See the maquis scrubland and Mediterranean plants such as myrtle, rosemary and thyme, which grow wild in vast quantities.

The name Albufera has its origins in the Arabic for ‘the small sea’, al-buhayra. The freshwater lagoon itself is Spain’s largest lake despite only being about one-third of its size two centuries ago. There are more than 30 islets jutting of from the water adding a scenic touch to any photos you take during your cruise, which will be about half-an-hour long.

The villages around the lagoon are renowned for their paellas (the dish has its origins here) and make an ideal stop for lunch (not included).
