Descripción ampliada The neighborhood of Montmartre, one of the mythical sites in Paris has always stood apart from the rest of the city. Build around the crest of a hill in northern Paris, Montmartre was for a long time a country village inhabited by artisans, tradesmen and performers and known for its windmills and farms.

During this exploration of Montmartre, we will talk about history, religion and look at the traditions, lifestyle, and bohemian character of the neighborhood as it has evolved over the centuries. Already an artists' hangout at the end of the 19th century, Montmartre's bohemian cheap living and nightlife attracted young artists like Picasso, Braque, Modigliani and Vincent Van Gogh. Walking up and down the winding cobbIestone streets we'll see artist studios, risqué cabarets, gas-lit cafes, and concert halls. We'll visit the Moulin de la Galette, immortalized by artists like Toulouse-Lautrec, and Renoir. The only functioning windmill still standing in Paris, the Moulin de la Galette was a meeting point for the down-and-out bohemians of the neighborhood and a perfect place to contemplate the modern revolution taking place in art and society at the time.

We'll discuss the importance of the quarter in the history of Christianity as the home of the Society of Jesuits and trace the route that the decapitated and martyred Saint Denis supposedly walked (carrying his own head no less). Continuing upwards to the highest point in Paris, we'll stop at the Sacré-Coeur Basilica and admire the spectacular panoramic view of the city. With its Romano-Byzantine features, Sacré-Coeur stands in sharp contrast to the Gothic architecture of Notre Dame and Saint Eustache, both of which can be seen from its belvedere.

Throughout this walk we'll strive to put Montmartre within an urban and social context, painting a vivid portrait of the key figures who have lived here and been inspired here throughout history. This is a great walk for people intrigued by the art and intellectual movements of the early 20th century.
